Notes on Tires

Tires are normally classified in the format  xxx/yy AA zz where:

  • xxx is the width of the tire from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters
  • yy is the aspect ratio, or the ratio of the sidewall height to the tire’s width
  • AA is two things.  First is the tire type.  This is most often R for radial.  The second letter corresponds to the speed rating of the tire.  Speed ratings are as follow:

  • zz is the diameter of the wheel that the tire fits, in inches
  • The designation “M+S” following the size information designates a tire designed for extra traction in mud and snow
